Hi + Hello

Happy Week 41! On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize those who came before the colonizers, those who lived on this land before it was taken from up under them, those who have found a way to continue living despite that. The concept remains wild to me, that you can walk into someone’s home and proclaim it as your own, and use violent words, actions, and ultimately laws to manipulate and monopolize “ownership”. It is disturbing to think about, and I acknowledge and admit my privilege in not having to confront it daily, or weekly, or much at all. And even as I say this, I know it’s still happening to this day, just in different ways, with different tactics, even right up under me. The thought is hard to hold, like so many others. So for now, I will imagine a world in which we respect people, their property, and the pasts that have led them to their present, especially the ones who have had theirs stripped and manipulated and diluted down to a fraction of their fullness. Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

🔧 Tips, Tricks, and Tidbits

We, and  therefore our bodies, are constantly responding to the demands of daily life, moving through periods of stress, activation, recovery, and restoration. When we experience stress, our nervous system responds by increasing alertness, releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, and preparing us to manage whatever challenge is in front of us. This is natural and often useful, but we’re not designed to remain in a heightened state of activation indefinitely. Just as we experience peaks of stress, we need periods of recovery that allow our heart rate to settle, our muscles to relax, and our nervous system to return to a more regulated state. When stress becomes chronic and opportunities for recovery are limited, we may notice changes in our sleep, mood, concentration, energy, and physical health. The goal isn't to eliminate stress entirely, but to create enough opportunities for restoration that our bodies can respond to life's demands without remaining overwhelmed by them. Rest, mindful breathing, social connection, and engaging in pleasant activities are just a few ways we can build the capacity to manage what comes next.

😏 Unrelated Musings

I caught a sunrise the other day. I was tired, sleepy, and cold, and I wish I could say it was a breathtaking experience but… hot take: sunsets are better. At least from where I sat, it was hard to look at the sun as it rose. All I saw was a halo around what I knew to be the sun, but the colors all blended together, blinding me. Maybe my eyesight is going - it’s not tip top to begin with - but I found it hard to see the beauty that I anticipated. I’m not saying it wasn’t there, but it was hard to see, and hard to appreciate. And when I looked away because the discomfort was too much to stand, I just saw bright spots and couldn’t really see what was right in front of me. I think there’s a lesson in there somewhere and it might take me a few more days and nights to process it down to something that makes sense. What I will say is this: what a privilege to take a morning to go look at a hard-to-watch sunrise. Perhaps I’ll do it again, or perhaps, I’ll make it a point to go see my preference: the sunset.

My favorite possible self writes another blog post in approximately one week! My mantra says I follow through, so I must! See you there!
