Hi + Hello

Happy Week 37! Ain’t it fun…. living in the real world! Sometimes, yes, and sometimes the responsibilaries of adulthood feel like too much. And yet, each day, we (I) try to chase and the choose the joy we (I) seek. Ain’t it fun.

✍🏾 #RandomSessionNotes

1. Focus on what you want, not what you don't want.

2. "Use caution" and "Handle with care" apply to people too.

3. Forgive yourself for making choices you wouldn't make today.

🔧 Tips, Tricks, and Tidbits

The word dialectical refers to the idea that two things that seem contradictory can both be true at the same time. In psychology, one of the most useful examples is the relationship between acceptance and change. We can accept ourselves, another person, or a situation as it currently exists while also acknowledging that something needs to change.

This can feel counterintuitive because we often assume that accepting something means we’re choosing to keep it. But acceptance can actually make change more possible. We have to accurately acknowledge where we are before we can make thoughtful decisions about where we want to go. I can accept that I made a mistake and still work to repair it. I can accept someone for who they are and decide their behavior doesn’t work for me. I can appreciate parts of my life while wanting more for myself. I can be proud of how far I’ve come and recognize that I still have work to do.

The dialectic gives us room to replace either/or with both/and. Instead of deciding that something must be entirely good or bad, working or failing, acceptable or unacceptable, we make space for complexity. It’s learning how to do both, how to live both, at the same time.

😏 Unrelated Musings

One of my new favorite things to do recently, when given the chance, is to watch movies with groups of people. That sounds silly because movie theaters, but I mean a somewhat carefully selected group of people who are gathered for a shared purpose beyond just watching the movie. Most recently, in this vain, I watched Belly with such a group. I was tickled by the commentary, the recollection of lines, the surprise of plots and subplots (and the loss of plots) long forgotten, and the collective belly laughs we shared at various points. I think it’s the gathering of like-minded folk who have similar but different life experiences and the conjoining and converging of those lives for the occasion of collective joy… oh what fun and oh what a blessing.

My favorite possible self writes another blog post in approximately one week! My mantra says I follow through, so I must! See you there!
