Hi + Hello
Happy Week 38! Fresh off my sister’s wedding weekend, I’m still feeling the love and joy (and soreness) from the joining of her and her now husband, and also, our families. What sticks out the most was the way the families showed up for their respective loved one and worked together to make it a memorable time for the bride and groom. All the time, energy, planning, resources, and stress were well worth it. My hope for my sister and her husband, and all those who marry, is that the wedding day is just the beginning and that the best days are ahead of them.

🔧 Tips, Tricks, and Tidbits
As we grow up, we learn about ourselves through other people. What we repeatedly hear in childhood — good, bad, and otherwise — can become part of the story we tell ourselves about who we are. As children, we often don’t have the perspective to consider whether those descriptions are accurate, incomplete, or just someone’s dysregulated interpretation. We absorb the categorizations over time, internalizing them, and they can influence our self-concept, expectations, relationships, and the choices we make.
As adults, it’s useful to periodically examine our beliefs about ourselves. Some of what feels like self-knowledge and identity may have been temporary evaluations that we’ve carried as fact. We get to assess what we’ve been told about ourselves through our adult lens, and decide its accuracy, its usefulness, and whether we’re better served with or without that categorization and internalization. Our earliest ideas about ourselves may come from other people, but we have the final word on who we are.

😏 Unrelated Musings
I have a wish. I wish that, one day, for maybe one whole day, perhaps each year, we turn off the internet. Like, pause it… turn the whole thing off. And not just pause it as in we can’t/don’t use it, but pause it and for 24 hours, we don’t know life with it… we go back to pre-internet existence seamlessly. We’re not as accessible, we talk to each other on a house phone, we watch the same tv program at the same time as everyone else, we frolic outside and go for walks, we call a cab or get real (and life) directions from wise council we know and trust, we use actual cash or card, and we’re not impacted by overexposure. I think the internet was meant to be an information highway, a point of connection, and I think we took it way farther than it was intended to go. Now it’s bearing kids (AR and AI and more things that start with As) that will go even farther. Their existence is not bad, but our use is impacting us in ways we know are bad and in many other ways we can’t be sure about just yet. I mean, I don’t want to do away with it entirely, but I would like to experience what it was like in the good old days before we took it too far, before everything we did was ‘for the ‘gram’ and I don’t know when and what that point was, but it was way back when.
