"I got a talent for turning whatever life throw at me into a blessing."

Hi + Hello

Happy Week 29! Spoiler alert: Spain won the World Cup. Not a spoiler alert: I was tickled by the halftime show. The babies did their thing, singing for unity at the final display of various countries fighting and acting a fool for their superiority. If there’s anything we can all unify on, it’s that Shakira can still shake a tailfeather. In any case, I’ve enjoyed the free, educational, and, at times, quite funny discourse on the internal struggle many of us faced in rooting for a colonizing country. The victors are not gonna get away scot-free; the losers, their spawn, got it from somewhere! Anyway, yet another exciting time has come to an end, and I’m okay with that. My nervous system needs the rest.

🔧 Tips, Tricks, and Tidbits

Generational trauma has helped us understand how the experiences of those before us can shape the way we think, feel, and respond today. But inheritance isn't limited to pain. We also inherit resilience, resourcefulness, traditions, values, and survival strategies that carried our families through difficult times. Regardless of the label, some of those adaptations continue to serve us well, while others may no longer fit the lives we're living.

Useful questions we can ask are:

What do I notice in myself that seems to be a familial inheritance?

Do I want to keep it?

If not, what am I ready to change?

Every generation receives something and leaves something behind. We have the opportunity to recognize what was passed down, preserve what serves us, and thoughtfully change what doesn't, creating new patterns that better serve the lives we're building today and the generations that follow.

😏 Unrelated Musings

I had to opportunity to see Lynae Vanee live and I’m so glad I took my girl up on it. She shared her debut EP Sundays in the Overflow, the visual version, and we were blessed to be present for a conversation between her and poet Jasmine Mans. The whole thing was sincerely above my intellectual pay grade but I did take some notes in hopes that I can digest some nuggets. A few stuck out to me but one I think I can express is this: we have many things we can offer to the world, and it doesn’t have to be the same thing every day. My weekday offering will likely not be the same as my weekend offering, and yet it’s an offering nonetheless. In fact, I’d like to get away from seeing the work I do, the career I chose as my singular offering to the world, and instead, be cognizant and intentional about offering and being an offering to others, and to myself, in my daily life. As I continue to sit with the thought, this comes to me: I think we’ll find we have a lot more to offer than we think when we value and freely give the offerings of human decency.

My favorite possible self writes another blog post in approximately one week! My mantra says I follow through, so I must! See you there!
